Joining the rowing club at UWA can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only is rowing a great full-body workout, but it can also provide a sense of community and camaraderie that can be hard to find on campus. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your university rowing experience.

  1. Get involved early. One of the best ways to make the most of your time in the rowing club is to get involved as soon as possible after O-Day in late February. This can help you make friends and connections within the club, and also give you the opportunity to learn from more experienced rowers.
  2. Attend as many training sessions as possible. Rowing is a sport that requires a lot of practice to perfect. The more time you spend on the water, the better you will become. Additionally, attending training can help you build a strong bond with your crewmates, which can make the experience more enjoyable.
  3. Set goals for yourself. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rower, it’s important to set goals for yourself. This could be something as simple as wanting to improve your technique, or something more ambitious like wanting to make the A-grade Eight. Having goals will help you stay motivated and focused during practices and races.
  4. Take advantage of the coaches. Your coaches are there to help you succeed. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or seek advice. They can provide valuable insights and feedback that can help you improve your performance. Our coaches are primarily volunteers and want to see you reach our goals!
  5. Get involved in club events. Rowing is not just about training and racing. We also have social events and fundraisers throughout the year. These events can be a great way to meet new people and have fun with your teammates.
  6. Take care of yourself. Rowing can be physically and mentally demanding, so it’s important to take care of yourself. This includes getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and staying hydrated. It’s also a good idea to stretch before and after sessions and races to help prevent injuries.
  7. Practice good sportsmanship. Rowing is a competitive sport, but it’s important to remember to always be a good sport. This means congratulating your opponents after a race (three cheers for the other crews), whether you win or lose, and being gracious in victory or defeat.
  8. Have fun. Above all, the most important thing is to have fun. Rowing can be a challenging sport, but it can also be extremely rewarding. Remember to enjoy the experience and make the most of your time in the rowing club.

In conclusion, joining a rowing club at university can be a fantastic way to stay active, make new friends, and be part of a community. By following these tips, you can get the most out of your university rowing experience and make it a memorable and rewarding part of your college years.
